Translation:

In the seven hundred miles of the Three Gorges, the mountains on both sides stretch without interruption. The steep cliffs and overlapping peaks hide the sky and block out the sun. It is not until midday or midnight that one can see the sun or moon.

During the summer when the river floods the hills, navigation upstream and downstream is completely blocked. However, if there is an urgent imperial decree to be delivered, sometimes a boat departs from Baidi in the morning and arrives at Jiangling by nightfall, covering a distance of twelve hundred li. Even riding a galloping horse or riding the wind would not be faster.

In spring and winter, white rapids and emerald pools alternate, with clear reflections swirling around. On the sheer cliffs grow strange pines, and there are cascading springs and waterfalls splashing among them. The water is clear, the trees are lush, the mountains are high, and the grass is abundant; it is indeed full of charm.

Whenever the weather clears up after a frosty dawn, the forests are cold and the streams quiet. Often, there will be high apes howling long and mournfully, their cries echoing through the empty valleys, turning and lingering for a long time before fading away. Hence, fishermen sing: "In Badong, the Three Gorges are long, and three calls of the apes make the clothes wet with tears."
